KB Loves Downton Abbey

Hey, in case you didn’t know, I’m super cultured. Like, I’m like, the most cultured and like, well-rounded person I know.

And because of that, I obviously love all things PBS/NPR related and/or British. So imagine my delight when I stumbled across a PBS show that was British! It was like Christmas and Hanukkah with a little slice of Kwanza on the side.

In case you are uncivilized savages and haven’t figured it out yet, I’m talking about Downton Abbey. Better known as KB’s new favorite show.

Let me give you a quick run down:

There is a super loaded family in 1912 made up of Earls or Dukes or Lords or something. I don’t know how that sh!t works. I’m not British. Anyway, they live in a huge house (surprisingly called Downton Abbey) and they spend their lives drinking tea and having diner parties. Downstairs are their servants who get up at the butt crack of dawn and slave away cleaning the house, feeding and dressing the rich family, and trying out various hideous hairstyles.

Not interested yet? What if I told you the upstairs family has 3 daughters 16-20ish so no one can inherit the title (because they don’t have a penis). Instead, they bring in a male cousin who is just far enough removed from the family for it to be okay that he dates one of the daughters. And then everyone’s happy, right?
We're third cousins so this is ok!

Wrong.

Two of the three daughters hate each other and spend the majority of the series doing various brutal things to try to destroy each other’s lives. For instance, the oldest daughter has sex with a Turkish diplomat and he dies in her bed (that happens, right?). The middle sister finds out about it and writes a letter to the Turkish embassy that not only gets the oldest sister into a lot of trouble but also makes everyone talk about how big of a slut she is. The older sister retaliates by breaking up the middle sister’s relationship. It’s family relationships at their best.
Look at how pissed the sister in the background looks!

There is also a bunch of awesome things going down with the servants including thievery, homosexuality, back stabbing, divorce, and murder but we would be here forever if I explained it to you.

And if you still aren’t sold about the epicness of this show, I saved my trump card for last…

It has Maggie Smith! And Maggie Smith is at her absolute best. Every time she is in a scene you can expect some awesome zingers. Still don’t believe me? Watch these clips.

Great. Glad we now agree that you need to start watching Downton Abbey. It’s the part of your life that’s been missing. Season 1 is watch instantly on Netflix and I think Season 2 is going to be added soon. Season 3 is being shot now.
